Keep on keeping on

Even in times of distress, God sees us and gives us the miraculous angels to be our help. We need only to endure, not to give up, and not to turn inward. We need to welcome the new comers with the words, “Welcome, we been waiting for you.”

Our faces, our faces, are shining

Christians are sealed by the Holy Spirit as Christ’s own forever. Any statement to the contrary is simply false. Even though we are sinful and not perfect, still God’s power working through us is sufficient to work mighty miracles that even Christ could not do during his limited time on Earth. We are not to allow the Ash Wednesday words to deter us from our God given directive to work Christ's miracles of love, justice, and mercy in our world.

Healed to serve

Jesus came into the world to heal and save us. When we pray, we should pray believing God will indeed help us. We do not have all the cures yet, and may never have, but God is merciful and hears our prayers and always comes to heal us spiritually even when physical healing may not happen. We are to pray for ourselves and for and with others in times of dis-ease. More and more miracles continuously happen by the grace of God.

The good and the evil among us

Discerning the voices plays a key role in today’s society. Christians are challenged to look beyond the surface, to find the presence and love of Christ in another person, and to respond with Christ’s love in all situations.

Ready to go

The call of Christ to his first followers is simple and direct. His first proclamation is “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” He does not first train his closest followers, he simply calls them, and they follow. Our own lives are sufficient for us to be fishers of people for Christ. We only need to step up to the need to proclaim the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe, just as did Jesus.

A life without deceit

The progression of our faith may mirror that of Nathanael who in today’s Gospel lesson goes from skeptic to belief when confronted with the actual Son of God.

Our most important decision

The magi came to find the Christ Child because it was the most significant event ever that could have happened in their time. They came in spite of a disbelieving world. They came in spite of the improbability of such a Holy One’s existence. They came because Christ was that important, that significant, that profound above anything they had ever witnessed. We join the magi today in bowing in worship and adoration of the Christ Child.

Where do we go from here?

The shepherds in the Bethlehem fields represent every person, low to high, to whom the Christ came. Our Christmas obligation for the coming New Year is to follow Jesus and make disciples.

How this happened – chromosomes and the Holy Spirit

Is Mary the sole source of Jesus’ DNA? If so, the Incarnation was a unique example of God’s miraculous work using the ‘stuff’ God created in the beginning of time. Jesus remains unique of all humans, King of kings, and Lord of lords.

Christmas fads versus the real thing

The reason for the season is the little babe in the Bethlehem manger, born of a woman, nurtured by two unremarkable people, Mary and Joseph. As we return to the roots of Christmas, we will regain the peace and joy of the season.
